Here’s what’s been happening at your neighborhood Y. Many people have no idea how hard we work in our community. Please view some of our stories to learn more about us.

Our Annual Campaign kicked off on April 1st! Fundraising efforts go to assist the many programs that the New Castle Community YMCA offers to youths and families. Co-Chairs of our Member to Member Annual Campaign Dorice Shover and Carole Sheen had this message to share to thier fellow New Castle Community YMCA members about the importance of donating to the Annual Campaign:

"Hi I am Dorice Shover and this is Carole Sheen, co-chairs of the Community Annual Campaign for Youth for the New Castle YMCA.

You probably know that the Y helps adults, kids and families live healthier lives.

But did you know that the Y provides financial assistance to those who can’t afford membership and programs on their own?  Our Annual Campaign provides scholarships to nearly 1,000 community members each year.

The Y is committed to empowering youth to reach their personal potential, especially at a critical time in their young lives when they are at risk to start unhealthy behaviors, such as substance abuse and school drop-out.  Nearly 300 local teens are offered free summer memberships through our Seventh grade initiative.

These are just a few ways in which your donated dollars help our local children and families.  Over our combined 58 years of involvement with the New Castle Y, Carole and I have seen firsthand the difference the Y makes in our community.

Please join us, through your generosity, to ensure that all of our neighbors can reach their potential.

    Thank you!"

  • NCCY Masters Take Home the Championship

    April 12, 2019

This past weekend our NCCY Masters participated in the Allegheny Mountain YMCA/YWCA Master Swimming Association (AMYMSA) season championship meet. The meet was held at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.  Collectively the NCCY Masters participated in 7 events and took home the championship in their division!

Our aquatics director Brittany Zastawniak had this to say, “it’s fun to see how far they’ve come.  Our group has a good time and believes in friendly competition.  An 18 year old will swim against a 67 year old and age doesn’t matter. Swimming is an activity available for all ages.”

Congratulations on the win NCCY Masters!

  • Welcome Maria McKee

    September 24, 2018

We are pleased to announce that Maria McKee will be serving as our new CEO effective Monday, October 1. Maria succeeds Dick Lyons, who retired on August 24.

Maria comes to this position well prepared having served in several leadership roles with our Y from 1998 to 2015. Her responsibilities during that time included CFO, Associate Executive Director, and COO. She spent the last 3 years of her career as the Director of Annual Giving and Special Events at the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh.

A New Castle native, Maria has a passion for serving our community. In addition to her long-term commitment to the YMCA’s mission, Maria is an active member of our community serving on the board at Arts & Education at the Hoyt. We are excited to have a leader with such a strong history with the Y and enthusiasm for serving our local community.

"It is an honor to be chosen to lead the New Castle Community Y. This Y has a long history of positively impacting lives and I am excited about the opportunity to build upon that legacy,” said Maria. “ I envision the New Castle Y playing a growing role in forming collaborations with community partners to serve more people and expand our reach into Lawrence County. I am thrilled to be serving in this role in a community that is so near and dear to my heart."

Please join us in welcoming her back to the New Castle Y family!

  • CEO Announces Retirement

    May 23, 2018

New Castle Community YMCA CEO Dick Lyons announced that he will be retiring as of August 24, 2018. Lyons served as the organization’s CEO since July 1, 2014.

“I have truly enjoyed serving this community,” said Lyons. “This is a great organization and I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this Y family. I look forward to spending time with my wife and family.”

“Dick has done a tremendous job improving our YMCA and its impact on our community,” said Randy Silverman, YMCA Board President. “Under Dick’s leadership, we were able to make significant improvements to both the downtown YMCA and the Y-Zone, as well as broaden our impact in Lawrence County by providing additional programs and services to children and families in need.”

Lyons served the YMCA family for more than 35 years, with a career that spanned 5 YMCAs across the country. During his tenure in New Castle, Lyons oversaw two major facility renovations. A $2.4 million renovation of the downtown branch in 2015 which included new and remodeled locker rooms, an expanded youth center, a new community room and drop-in child watch center, upgraded equipment, and other improvements throughout the facility. As well as a $250,000 renovation of the Y-Zone branch in 2016 which included the creation of locker rooms, an aerobics studio, and a drop-in child watch center.

In addition to capital improvements, Lyons was instrumental in growing the YMCA’s membership, strengthening the organization’s financial health, and leading its mission to serve the community.

“The board is grateful for the unyielding effort Dick has put forth advancing our YMCA,” said Silverman. “Our community will benefit from the accomplishments made under his leadership for many years to come.”

The YMCA Board of Directors has established a search committee to identify the organization’s next leader and develop a succession plan to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of service for Y members and the community it serves.

  • New Sunday Hours

    January 4, 2018

There’s never been a better time to join the New Castle Community YMCA. The Y kicks off the New Year with new extended hours.

Beginning Sunday, January 7, the New Castle Y's operating hours will be extended to include Sunday mornings. Both the downtown YMCA and Y-Zone locations will open at 8:00 a.m. and remain open until 5:00 p.m.

“Our members spoke and we listened,” said CEO Dick Lyons, “It is our mission and desire to be accessible to everyone, so with that in mind we are extending our hours to better accommodate the needs of our members and the community.”

The updated hours at the downtown New Castle YMCA are Monday thru Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    The updated hours at the Y-Zone are Monday thru Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The new extended hours have also allowed the Y to expand their already robust group fitness class schedule. The Y has added a new TRX Suspension Training class at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays, as well as a new Gentle Yoga class at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays. Both classes will take place in the aerobics studio at the downtown branch. As always, group fitness classes are free to YMCA members!

  • Dallas Hartman Sponsors Learn to Swim Program for Local Children

    December 7, 2017

Thanks to the generosity of Dallas W. Hartman, local school children are receiving free swim instruction and water safety classes at the New Castle Community YMCA. The Learn to Swim program is offered to students, grades second through fourth, in six different school districts, as well as local children who are home schooled.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years old. “The statistics on drowning are sobering. We want to help save lives by ensuring that children are knowledgeable about water safety and equipped with basic swimming skills,” said Dallas Hartman.

Participating school districts include Laurel, New Castle Christian Academy, Union, Mohawk, Neshannock, and Shenango. The program includes a pre-assessment to evaluate each child’s skill level at the beginning of the session. Students are then grouped by skill level and receive small group instruction to help them progress to their personal potential. More than 600 local children are being served through the program, which will continue throughout the 2017-2018 school year.

“We are grateful for Dallas Hartman’s support,” said Dick Lyons, CEO of the New Castle Y. “His dedication to our community through this program is making a difference in the lives of hundreds of local students.”
